HISTORY

Small Hydroelectric Projects (SHP) flourished in the province of Quebec at the beginning of the century. However, with the advent of larger scale complexes such as the ones on the James Bay river, SHPs slowly became outdated. During the 1980’s this context changed progressively. Rehabilitation of SHPs has now become an important social objective, the technical aspects of which present a significant challenge.

Serge Proulx, who founded SCP in 1991 has more than 25 years of experience in the field of small hydroelectric plants and is one the pioneers of this movement in Quebec. The expertise of SCP initiated around small municipal grids such as Hydro-Sherbrooke, Hydro-Magog as well as within the pulp and paper industry. In 1993 SCP became the first private energy producer since the nationalisation of electricity in 1968.

Today, SCP is one of the only Canadian firm, exclusively specified in small and medium hydro. It has conducted numerous station rehabilitation as well as new site development in Quebec, Canada as well as internationally namely in Asia, Latin America, and the Carabbeans.

MISSION

SCP’s mission is to develop the hydroelectric potential in Canada and abroad as a renewable energy alternative integrated into the social environmental and patrimonial fabrics.

To achieve this, we require to constantly develop new technologies reducing the cost of energy generation. This innovative instinct enables us to ensure the viability of SHPs and incidentally enables us to rescue remnants of our architectural and technical heritage.

INTERNATIONAL

Several countries and especially developing countries rely heavily on thermal generation using diesel and/or coal purchased from other countries with hard currencies. For many such countries, the development of indigenous hydroelectric resources and capabilities has become a national priority.

SCP aims at sharing its experience at the international level whether through project realisation or studies. This is even more applicable within countries who realise that the initial step in developing local capacities is through the development of smaller scale projects. In such a growing context, SCP is an ideal partner to enhance indigenous capacities and transfer technologies efficiently.

Small hydroelectric development abroad represents a great challenge not only technically but also culturally, socially and financially. SCP strongly believes that such challenges can only be achieved through long term partnerships with local organisations (companies, co-operatives, NGO’s).
